While the players win in the long run, they could lose any one hand and that is why they are betting an amount that is in proportion to their advantage. The players are maximizing the gains while minimizing the risks. The proportion of the bet according to the true count is called the Kelly Criterion.

When the player has an edge of 1%, he doesn’t bet 1% of the bankroll necessarily. The player must tune the strategy considering also the impact of splitting and doubling.

For a game of 6 decks with the rules that you know from above the optimum bet is 76% of the player’s advantage. Here’s a table of optimum bets that applies well for most multi deck games also.

True count

Advantage

%Optimum Bet

-1 or lower

-1.00% or more

0%

0

-0.50%

0%

1

0%

0%

2

0.5%x76%

0.38%

3

1%x76%

0.76%

4

1.5%x76%

1.14%

5

2.0%x76%

1.52%

6

2.5%x76%

1.90%

7

3.0%x76%

2.28%

By using this table, you can determine the optimal bet for any bankroll; just multiply the figure in the last column by the amount of the bankroll. Thus, for a bankroll of $3000, the optimal bet for a true count of 2 is .0038 X $3000 = $11.40.

There are some things that are linked with the betting table.

First, you can’t bet in units of less than 1$, so the bets should be rounded off.

Second, you should bet in until of 5$ to make you look like an average player and deflect the attention of the casino personnel.

Third, it is not possible to reconfigure the betting schedule while playing because of the continuous changes.

Fourth, it is not possible to play only at shoes with a true count of 2 and higher. All these things have a negative impact on your winnings and you should play to minimize the losses here.

A simple exercise that will teach you to count cards is this: take a deck of cards and when a card that is –1 is drawn just say minus one and when a low card is drawn say one. When a neutral card is out of the deck don’t say anything and go further. That will make automatic the card count. Notice that you treat each card separately and you don’t have a running count yet.

It’s time now to learn how to keep the running count. After you can state the point value of the cards from a deck then you are ready to get to the next step.

Take a deck and remove 4 cards from it to verify how precise your count is. Then begin to count keeping the running count after each card is drawn. For example, your first card is a 10 then the running count is –1, the second is a J the running count is –2, the third is an 8 the running count is now –2, the fourth is a 3 the running count is –1 and so on.

You got to work at a deck until the accuracy is not a problem. Then you continue with 2, 3, 4 decks until you are accurate on those. Note that after this you got to work on speed and you got to take into account also the distractions from a real live casino. So your technique should have no flaw in order to allow you to perform it in the casino in a relaxed manner.

In order to improve the speed and the accuracy of your count you are going to learn some shortcuts that will help you tremendously and reduce the stress in the casino while making you appear natural.

One of the options you have in the blackjack game is: surrender There are two versions of surrender: early surrender and late surrender.

Early surrender: allows players to quit 2-card hands after seeing the up card of the dealer. This gives an additional advantage to the player and this is why many casinos have abandoned this option.

Late surrender: is when the player waits until the dealer checks for a blackjack. If the dealer doesn’t have a blackjack, the player may surrender.

The rules may differ from one casino to the other so be sure to check the rules before you enter the play.

The table in the game of blackjack allows from one to seven players. The first seat on the left of the dealer is known as the First Base and the first seat on the right of the dealer is known as the Third Base.

A square for betting is printed in front of each player seat. In front of the dealer is the chip tray. The deck or the shoe is on the left of the dealer and the minimum bet sign, which you need to read before you sit down to play.

On the immediate right of the dealer is the money drop slot where all currency and tips are placed. Next to the drop slot is the discard tray.

After the following things are done the play begins: the dealer shuffles the cards, the deck is cut by a player sing the marker card, and then the dealer burns a card. The players may make a wager by placing the desired amount of chips into the betting box.

From time to time a player may sit out a hand or two for various reasons. However, if you try to sit out too many hands especially when there are people waiting, you will be asked to leave until you are ready to play.

After all bets are down, the cards are dealt from left to right, two for each player. The cards might be dealt face up or face down according to the casino rules. If they are dealt face up don’t touch them because they are dealt that way primarily to prevent cheating.

The dealer receives one card up and one card down. The casinos being noisy, you might need the hand signal to the dealer to perform the desired action.

When you want to hit and the cards were dealt face down, lightly flick the cards across the felt two times. If the cards were dealt face up, point at the cards with a quick stabbing motion. You can also nod your head yes while saying hit. When you want to stand the best way is to move your hand in a level attitude with your palm down from left to right. You should be above the table a few inches. It also helps if you nod your head no while saying “stand” or “stay”.

Blackjack with single deck cards is pretty much eliminated from the Nevada casinos and the tables are usually full. Generally, the game is played with multiple decks for two reasons: first it allows the dealer to play more hands in a particular amount of time and second it reduces but it doesn’t eliminate the advantage that the player has from counting the cards.

The dealer plays an automatic game to avoid his/her involvement. If the dealer has a total of 16 or less, he/she must hit. If the dealer’s hand is 17 or more, he/she must stand. In some casinos the dealer can hit on soft 17 which give the house a small advantage. The automatic strategy of the dealer doesn’t allow the players any advantage in what hitting or standing is concerned. On the other hand the players can do anything they want as far as hitting and standing goes.

When a player gets a blackjack from the first two cards(a “natural”), he/ she is played 150% more than the original bet. If you bet 100$ and you have a natural blackjack you get 150$ in return. Doubling down is restricted to 2-card hands, when the total is usually 9,10 or 11 but some casinos allow doubling down on any 2-card hand.

If you have the appropriate total in the first two cards and the cards were dealt face down, turn them over and put them on the dealer’s side of the betting square.

If your total is appropriate and the cards were dealt face up , point to the cards and say “double” when the dealer prompts you for a card and put an equal amount of chips next to those already in the betting box. Then, the dealer will give you only one card and she/he will move on to the next hand.

If you have a pair that you want to split and the cards dealt to you are face down, turn them over and place them a few inches apart one from another. If the cards were dealt face up, point to them and say “split” when the dealer prompts you for a card.

The existing bet will go with one hand and you will place an equal amount of chips for the other card. Now you are playing two hands with the additional rule that if your cards were two aces and you split and you get a ten, this is not natural blackjack and your payoff will be 100% not 150%.

An option that you have in the game is the insurance. When the dealer’s up card is an ace and the other players have two cards each. The dealer now asks the players if they want insurance. When a player wants insurance, half the original bet is put on the semicircle where it is written insurance.

If the dealer has a blackjack, the player wins the insurance and loses the remaining bet and the net result is zero net loss or gain. If the dealer doesn’t have a blackjack the side bet is lost and the rest of the bet is played normally. The basic strategy tells you to decline strategy. You can use insurance when you are counting cards. When the number of non-tens drops below 2 to 1 then it is time to take insurance.

Another option that you have in the game is surrender.

If you play a single deck game the Basic Strategy variations can be responsible of 25% of your results. It’s a must when you play a lot.

The most common decision that a player should make is Hit or Stand.

The first is with a hand of 16 against a dealer’s up card of 10. You should stand if the count is over 0 and hit if it is 0 or lower. This means that if the running count is 1 or higher, stand. Since the ‘decision’ number is 0, it’s not necessary to calculate the true count — the running count will do in this situation.

Don’t get confused here. Almost all basic strategy variations rely on the true count, but for those where the decision number is 0, the running count will suffice.

The Blackjack card counting can be regarded as the only method to turn the casino’s advantage around and favor the player. As soon as you add an efficient card counting technique, the advantage will be with you. You will be more likely to win when there are plenty of high cards on the deck – the dealer is more likely to win when there are plenty of low cards on the deck. The high cards are perfect for you as a player because the dealer will have to hit on a range of hands such as 15, 14, 13 and 12. Having a lot of high cards is good for you because these cards will increase your chances of getting the blackjack. So, card counting is all about knowing how many high cards are left on the deck – based on this, you will bet more money. When there are few high cards left, you will bet less money too. You will not have to keep the track of the all the card values that remain in the game. You will have to care just about the ratio of the low cards to the higher ones.

Start by counting the high cards as -1 and the low ones as +1. Each time one card is dealt, you will have to either subtract one or add one from your personal running count. When your number is a high one, you will know that the high cards are much more than the low ones and you can take your chances and bet even more money. When your number is a low one, you will have to bet lower because the high cards are fewer than the low ones. This is called card counting. There are plenty of pros when it comes to using the card counting. For instance, the odds will be in your favor. You will not have to posses a very good memory – all you need to know is that there are neutral, high and low cards. You will also be allowed to predict what cards are next in order to bet according to this. And maybe the biggest pro is the fact that card counting is not illegal for you to use.

But there are cons as well – for instance, if a casino picks up your card counting, you are very likely to be banned from playing at that place ever again. Keep in mind that the casino does not have to come up with a particular reason for doing so – you will be banned and that’s it. It is said that card counting can be used just in the real casinos. The online ones are based on a computer that will make the cards in order to come out quite randomly. Therefore, card counting may become worthless in this case. There are many ways for you to start learning how to count cards in order to make a killing on the decks. Just remember that you must not be caught in the act when counting your cards. Otherwise, this whole strategy will not work in your case.

Card counting is all about learning the right trick. These tricks must be practiced because practice makes perfect. You will also have to learn how to focus when trying to count your cards, especially if you take part to the online version of the blackjack. Do not let things distract your attention from the computer – you need to keep on counting regardless of your situation. But forget about being too focused especially if you play in a real casino – the dealer will notice your attention and he will know that you are counting your cards. The best thing for you to do is to counteract your card counting by trying to make some random shuffles. Subtlety is the keyword here because you need to stay aware of everything that happens around you especially when you are focused on card counting. Try and keep the betting spread small – the betting spread is the pattern you are likely to make with your own betting and the wide range of differences that are likely to appear between each of your bets. Therefore, you need to keep your increments low in order to avoid being spotted by the dealer.

The MIT Blackjack Team is the most famous team of blackjack players. These players were students coming from the top schools in USA. They were very educated and used some of the best known techniques in order to win at the real blackjack tables. Techniques such as shuffle tracking, hole carding and card counting were used by them in order to beat the dealers. Every member of this team has managed to practice the card counting over the years and increase the odds in the blackjack game. The group lasted for almost 3 decades.

At the beginning, the card counting was illegal and every player who was caught in the act was banned from the casino. But in 1979, a law was given out stating that the casinos were prevented from taking any sort of action against the players who were caught when counting the cards. Therefore, the card counting developed as a viable solution that could increase the odds when playing blackjack. This was also the moment when this team started up the whole adventure and become famous in the history of this popular game. The group was started by an individual known as Dave. He managed to gather three more persons in order to form the travel team that went to Atlantis City in order to try out the card counting systems. But the initial team had little success and this fact discouraged them.

Dave was left aside and one of the members went to see another person who was known for his success with the game – Bill Kaplan, a famous team leader who agreed to help the group and point out what the members were doing wrong. He also advised the group about the best card counting strategies to be used in order to win against the real casinos. Kaplan told them that every game situation must be dealt with by using a strategy that is adapted to it.

The new mentor managed to motivate and teach the whole team and its members started to have success. Under his supervision and management, the team started to earn the initial investment back and it also started to recruit more players for this game. However, their success was a short-lived one because there were plenty of casinos that were keen on maintaining the old rules and banned the team from entering their space. But this team remained the living proof that the card counting systems are successful when used in the right way and adapted to particular circumstances.

A well written Blackjack book can teach you the basics of this popular game and help you comprehend all the strategies related to the card counting systems. Here are the most frequently recommended Blackjack books.

A classic blackjack book Blackjack Attack: Playing the Pros’ Way, Don Schlesinger, (2005) is a book that is considered the best reference when it comes to the highly popular Hi-Lo systems related to card counting. This book comes with strategy tables needed for your basic strategy, explanations and a wide range of variations for different Blackjack rules. If you are a dedicated and serious player, you will find this book extremely helpful due to its detailed pieces of information. It is not a book written for beginners.

Professional Blackjack, written by Standford Wong in 1994 If you are a more advanced card counter who is already familiar with the necessary strategies, you should go for Blackjack Bluebook II – The Simplest Winning Strategies Ever Published, Fred Renzey (2006). This book comes with a really detailed explanation and exploration of all the statistics behind every card counting system. Also, it teaches you how to apply every card counting strategy. It is not an easy to read book, but if you are interested to learn card counting strategies as soon as possible, you may find it very efficient.

Playing 21 as a Martial Art, Arnold Snyder,(2005) is a book that includes all the basic strategies when it comes to using card counting systems together with alternatives to these systems, alternatives that come with varied levels of complexity in order to suit almost every type of Blackjack player.

Knock-Out Blackjack: The Easiest Card-Counting System Ever Devised by Olaf, Ph.D. Vancura and Ken Fuchs (1998). This book is aimed at all the players who want to win some real money when playing the game. Simple but really effective tricks and tips are provided together with efficient explanations that can meet the beginners’ needs.

A Winning Strategy for the Game of Twenty-One, Edward O Thorp (1966) is about the so-called K-O card counting system. This book provides a really simple yet straightforward and clear guide to this card counting system. Beginners and casual players find this book extremely helpful even if it is not as effective as other Blackjack books.

Million Dollar Blackjack, Ken Uston (1992) comes with really understandable explanations regarding statistical analysis and methods behind the already known card counting systems. It is to be regarded as a heavy read but the players who are keen on knowing more about theory will find this book quite interesting.
