Rules Of Blackjack
The rules may differ from one casino to the other so be sure to check the rules before you enter the play.
The table in the game of blackjack allows from one to seven players. The first seat on the left of the dealer is known as the First Base and the first seat on the right of the dealer is known as the Third Base.
A square for betting is printed in front of each player seat. In front of the dealer is the chip tray. The deck or the shoe is on the left of the dealer and the minimum bet sign, which you need to read before you sit down to play.
On the immediate right of the dealer is the money drop slot where all currency and tips are placed. Next to the drop slot is the discard tray.
After the following things are done the play begins: the dealer shuffles the cards, the deck is cut by a player sing the marker card, and then the dealer burns a card. The players may make a wager by placing the desired amount of chips into the betting box.
From time to time a player may sit out a hand or two for various reasons. However, if you try to sit out too many hands especially when there are people waiting, you will be asked to leave until you are ready to play.
After all bets are down, the cards are dealt from left to right, two for each player. The cards might be dealt face up or face down according to the casino rules. If they are dealt face up don’t touch them because they are dealt that way primarily to prevent cheating.
The dealer receives one card up and one card down. The casinos being noisy, you might need the hand signal to the dealer to perform the desired action.
When you want to hit and the cards were dealt face down, lightly flick the cards across the felt two times. If the cards were dealt face up, point at the cards with a quick stabbing motion. You can also nod your head yes while saying hit. When you want to stand the best way is to move your hand in a level attitude with your palm down from left to right. You should be above the table a few inches. It also helps if you nod your head no while saying “stand” or “stay”.
Blackjack with single deck cards is pretty much eliminated from the Nevada casinos and the tables are usually full. Generally, the game is played with multiple decks for two reasons: first it allows the dealer to play more hands in a particular amount of time and second it reduces but it doesn’t eliminate the advantage that the player has from counting the cards.
The dealer plays an automatic game to avoid his/her involvement. If the dealer has a total of 16 or less, he/she must hit. If the dealer’s hand is 17 or more, he/she must stand. In some casinos the dealer can hit on soft 17 which give the house a small advantage. The automatic strategy of the dealer doesn’t allow the players any advantage in what hitting or standing is concerned. On the other hand the players can do anything they want as far as hitting and standing goes.
When a player gets a blackjack from the first two cards(a “natural”), he/ she is played 150% more than the original bet. If you bet 100$ and you have a natural blackjack you get 150$ in return. Doubling down is restricted to 2-card hands, when the total is usually 9,10 or 11 but some casinos allow doubling down on any 2-card hand.
If you have the appropriate total in the first two cards and the cards were dealt face down, turn them over and put them on the dealer’s side of the betting square.
If your total is appropriate and the cards were dealt face up , point to the cards and say “double” when the dealer prompts you for a card and put an equal amount of chips next to those already in the betting box. Then, the dealer will give you only one card and she/he will move on to the next hand.
If you have a pair that you want to split and the cards dealt to you are face down, turn them over and place them a few inches apart one from another. If the cards were dealt face up, point to them and say “split” when the dealer prompts you for a card.
The existing bet will go with one hand and you will place an equal amount of chips for the other card. Now you are playing two hands with the additional rule that if your cards were two aces and you split and you get a ten, this is not natural blackjack and your payoff will be 100% not 150%.
An option that you have in the game is the insurance. When the dealer’s up card is an ace and the other players have two cards each. The dealer now asks the players if they want insurance. When a player wants insurance, half the original bet is put on the semicircle where it is written insurance.
If the dealer has a blackjack, the player wins the insurance and loses the remaining bet and the net result is zero net loss or gain. If the dealer doesn’t have a blackjack the side bet is lost and the rest of the bet is played normally. The basic strategy tells you to decline strategy. You can use insurance when you are counting cards. When the number of non-tens drops below 2 to 1 then it is time to take insurance.
Another option that you have in the game is surrender.
